Being soft and absorbent, pearls can absorb skin oils, dirt and perfume, and they do it very quickly. So clean your pearls frequently, preferably every time you wear them. This will stop any contaminants getting permanently absorbed into the pearls. Pearls don't like extreme temperatures, so be careful where you store them when not in use. Never leave your pearls in the glove box of your car on a hot day. Also make sure they're stored in a warmer room of the house, rather than in a cold, damp basement. It's also important to realize that pearls can get scratched easily, so store them in a soft place. This may mean a padded jewelry box, or perhaps wrap your pearls in a soft cloth before placing them in a drawer.
