Pearls - Freshwater Pearls From China
Pearls are a popular and very beautiful addition to any
jewelry collection. Many women find that pearls can be used
as an accessory for almost any type of outfit, which makes
them versatile as well as beautiful. However pearls are
quite soft, as far as gems go, and it's important to care
for them gentle and regularly. Here are a few tips for
keeping your pearls in peak condition.
To keep your pearls lustrous and glowing, it's important to
wipe them regularly using a soft cloth moistened with water.
Never use detergents to clean your pearls. Being soft and
absorbent, pearls can absorb skin oils, dirt and perfume,
and they do it very quickly. So clean your pearls
frequently, preferably every time you wear them. This will
stop any contaminants getting permanently absorbed into the
pearls.
Pearls don't like extreme temperatures, so be careful where
you store them when not in use. Never leave your pearls in
the glove box of your car on a hot day. Also make sure
they're stored in a warmer room of the house, rather than in
a cold, damp basement.
It's also important to realize that pearls can get scratched
easily, so store them in a soft place. This may mean a
padded jewelry box, or perhaps wrap your pearls in a soft
cloth before placing them in a drawer. Other jewelry, such
as diamonds or gemstones, can scratch pearls, so never store
them right next to each other. Always wrap up your pearls
first.
Pearls also don't like chemicals, including alcohol, vinegar
and hair spray. These substances can erode the surface of
the pearls. So don't use cleaning fluids that contain
alcohol or vinegar. Also, make sure you've finished applying
your cosmetics and hairspray before you put on your pearls,
so that you don’t inadvertently get any makeup or hairspray
on the surface of the pearls.
Finally, it's a good idea to restring your pearl necklace
every year or two, particularly if you wear it a lot. Most
pearls are strung on silk thread, and over time this can
weaken. The last thing you want to do is have the string
break while you're out, and your pearls roll off into places
where you'll never find them again.
